Sorry dude, but it’s ultimately YOUR responsibility to make sure YOU have the proper coverage for YOUR car. If you received your insurance cards, you should also have a policy declaration page which lists your specific coverage. Better find that and read up. If it lists collision and comprehensive, then you had full coverage, if it only lists liability, you are screwed. Do you have some sort of a confirmation from the insurer showing what you requested for coverage?

If you financed a vehicle then the bank would’ve notified you that you needed full coverage if you didn’t choose it. When you got your policy it should have a breakdown of what your premium covers. Find your policy and look it over to make sure that you have full coverage insurance.

This is why you’re supposed to READ THINGS and UNDERSTAND them before you SIGN them, even online.

Let me clear something up….there is no such thing as ‘full coverage’ insurance. You either purchased comprehensive/collision/towing/rental/GAP coverage or you didn’t…these are individual coverages and do not come as a “packaged” deal. The only coverage that is sold as “package” is bodily injury/property damage coverage, aka liability insurance. You write the insurance should have made you aware you didn’t have comprehensive/collision coverage….that’s not their responsibility, that’s yours. Their responsibility is to send you a copy of the Dec Page listing who and what is covered and what coverage(s) are on the policy.
Sounds like when you opened your mail and saw your insurance cards that was the ONLY thing you saw and completely disregarded the Declarations Page that was included. Had you bothered to read this page you would have known right then & there what coverage you had and could have acted immediately to make the appropriate change.
Unless you have evidence proving your intent was to buy comp/collision coverage, or you selected these coverages when you were online, you’re outta luck. Now all you can do is contact your lienholder & see if they forced insurance on your loan to protect their vehicle.

Well, this is one of the problems of buying insurance online. Most people know little to nothing about insurance & try to purchase insurance with no advice, or advice from people that are not insurance agents. That is why it is always best to buy at least your first policy from a good reputable agent. They will explain the coverages to you. Anyway, why would you buy insurance without an immediate quote? How do you know what you were getting, what you were paying for & how much it cost? The ID cards always come with the initial policy declaration. Did you ever read it?
Did you get other quotes from other sources? Was the policy you purchased online MUCH cheaper than everyone else? If so, didn’t you think something could be wrong with either the company or the coverage?
Now, another reason to get an agent is IF you asked for comprehensive & collision coverage on a vehicle, and THEY didn’t provide it & you can PROVE it, you can go after them to pay for your damages to your car. Mistakes happen, they are rare for most good agents, but they can happen. When you buy a policy on your own & you make a mistake, there is no place to go. Sorry to say, you are stuck paying for your own damages out of your pocket. I doubt your bank would have forced coverage so quickly but they may have, check with them to see if they did.
I hope you purchased enough liability (bodily injury & property damage) to cover the other party.
The first thing you should do is to go to a good independent agent, have them look at your current policy & have them quote you a policy, with what you have now & what you really should have for coverage.
Good luck to you. Hopefully you learned a lesson, it wasn’t too expensive for you & will correct things so this will not happen again.

Don’t play innocent — your insurance company had to provide you with a written policy and insurance cards. If you didn’t take the time to confirm coverage then this is ALL on you.

You can learn a bunch by reading and understanding what Bundysmom, sue & coast cowboy say.
This is a huge issue with people who buy insurance online. A real live insurance agent would ask you the questions needed to find out what coverage you needed. If you had a real agent you might have had a slim chance at making an errors and omissions claim against them to get paid.
You can’t expect the insurance company to tell you that you listed a lienholder but didn’t choose collision/comp coverage.
Sorry, but you alone are responsible for this. You have learned a very tough lesson but legally you have nobody to blame but yourself.

No doubt the easiest way to get insurance quotes is on the web.
Why would you waste your time on the phone calling around?
the last time i needed quotes on insurance i used one of these comparison sites and it was great.
this is the site i used and it was quick like less than 5 mins.
The last thing I want to do is listen to elevator music while waiting for a salesman.
Anyway I got good quotes and ended up saving money so I was happy.
So shop around and compare quotes which is easy on the net.
Good starting point is at this site.
