Good question.
Anytime you fill out online information you are at risk. One bad employee in a company can ruin your credit.
If anyone asks for your SS# while shopping for insurance, just tell then NO THANKS. They want to run your credit report (which has nothing to do with driving)
Call my source below. They don’t run your credit report.

Usually you are not legally compelled to provide your Social Security number to private businesses unless you are involved in a transaction in which the Internal Revenue Service requires notification. The Patriot Act requires financial institutions to verify customers’ identities, which can involve the SSN.
There is no law, however, that prevents businesses from requesting your SSN, and there are few restrictions on what businesses can do with it. But even though you are not legally required to disclose your SSN, the business does not have to provide you with service if you refuse to release it. So in a sense, you are strong-armed into giving your SSN. This is often the case when applying for insurance and opening utility accounts.
But don’t give up. Be sure to ask if there is an alternate number that you can provide to the company, such as your driver’s license number. Also ask if you can provide a deposit rather than giving your SSN to the company.

Generally they only ask if they are looking to run your credit report, which most insurance companies will do when evaluating you for coverage.

No. But what happens, is the information gets sold to agents, as leads. So it isn’t private.

Hello Beth,
No, it’s not particularly common that your identity is stolen by requesting on auto insurance quote online but the risk that it could happen, and the subsequent consequences, are enormous, so, why take the chance. What is very common, and very annoying, after completing an online insurance form are numerous unwanted solicitations.
In order to receive an accurate auto insurance quote personal information including your social security number is required. A much safer alternative is to contact a local insurance agent, in person or on the phone, and provide them with the information necessary for an accurate quote. Be sure and ask a few questions of your own first before providing personal information. How long have you been in business and how will you safeguard my personal information are totally appropriate questions.
