Question by Tiny Saviour:
Is buying an auto insurance on the web a good idea?

I just purchased a automobile last week (new). I have been getting on the web quotes from various insurance companies. Some local ones are way out of my budget (some ranging around 00 for a 6 month policy). I have found one I am interested in but the location is all the way in San Diego, Ca while I am up in Berkeley, Ca. That means I need a plane ticket to personally speak w/ an agent. I am not into the phone calls, it seems the prices increases.

The insurance company is Progressive, I have checked customers reviews, some good some bad. Pretty much it seems all insurance companies are the same. Customer reviews state the same, from Statefarm to progressive, it depends on luck I guess.

If you know what you are doing, it’s fine.

But most of the time, when you purchase online, the price changes – most of those places just harvest your personal information to sell to agents, as leads.

They aren’t “rates”, they are “indications”. Then when you go to actually BUY the policy, it changes after tehy do your credit check.

Progressive is a great company. You can call the 800 number, speak to them directly, and do everything on the web or by mail. Keep in mind, most people unhappy with claims, are unhappy because they did do it yourself insurance, and did not comprehend what they bought.

Oh, you CAN find a Progressive agent near you, using the agent locator button on their web page. You can walk in, and get coverage bound immediately.
