Question by liz g:
i’m buying automobile insurance online, what kind do i need if i’m making automobile payments and need full coverage?

Answer by mongersmom
I just went through this and it will ask you if you own the automobile or make payments and then it will kind of pull up what you need (Progressive will). You do need comp and collision, but there are also different rates for different deductibles. Some of it might depend on what your say requires, also. I did end up calling them, as I was unsure if I did it right, and they were very helpful. I have Progressive for my motorcycle and has a small oops, and they got back to me in a couple of hours, and I had the bike in the shop, estimated, and okayed in two days. Very fast service.

Go with a national company. Since you need full coverage, if you can afford a higher deductable, then go with the minimum. If you can’t afford the deductable, usually 2000, 1000, or 500, then go with the 500 deductable and as much coverage as you can afford for your monthly or 6 month payment.
As you add options, it should give you a total in the corner. I have used GEICO and Progressive online and they seem to offer the best.

Honestly, if you don’t know what you need & you buy online, you could be getting inadequate coverages. You need to buy liability (NEVER purchase the minimum, EVER), uninsured/underinsured for the same limits as your liability, medical payments (highest available) and/or PIP – some states have both, comprehensive & collision (towing & rental are optional). Make sure you list the loan company as loss payee on the policy.
You can get quotes online but before you buy, call a couple of local independent agents because they can advise you on the coverages you really should have. Go back & quote THOSE coverages online & see if you really save any money, you may be surprised & having an agent is cheaper.
A coworker of my husband just had a broken windshield. He had to call some call center out west, called back & got someone else. He was sent to a glass shop out of state. There are at least 2 glass shops in his own town that his company (a “1-800″ company) wouldn’t send him to. If he got his insurance with an agent, he could have gone to a local glass shop and saved the time, gas & aggravation & could have talked to someone in person who knows him by name.
But, it is up to you what you want to do.
Remember, you will get what you pay for.
