I have had my Auto insurance with USAA since 1964. Not only are they very competitive price wise they are very loyal and that is something most insurance companies these days do not have. I doubt very seriously you will find any auto insurance company anywhere with that kind of track record. Forty three years is a lot of loyalty. They stuck with me through the teenage years. They wrote insurance for may daughter when she was a Senior in Pharmacy School. No one else would touch her because she was young and did not have a job.

And it you ever are unfortunate enough to have a claim USAA is by far the best there is. They have very high standards and it is tough to get insurance with them but once you are in their system few people ever leave.

USAA has been so good to my family over the last 43 years I would not change for any amount of money.

FIrst off I have progressive insurance. I have been with them for 2 years since Prudential sold their auto / home insurance to Allstate. I had Prudential since I was 16 (now 37) and once they switched over to Allstate my insurance went from 660 dollars a year to 1250 dollars per year. I called Allstate and asked why such an increase. They told me that I had never had an accident or claim and that their statistics show I would be due to have one so they were increasing my premium because I would probably have an accident in the near future.
I searched for another company and like you got about 4 rates on line. Progressive offered the best rate at 850 dollars per year. After my first year was up my rate went to 950 per year. I called and they said that I had two doctor bills (one for 40 dollars and one for 160 dollars and i did not pay them because my insurance company is reliable for them) in collection... it is common practice for some car insurance companies to increase their premiums based on your credit history... this was news to me and made no sense but I paid it. I just got my bill for this coming year and it is 80 dollars more then the 950 from last year. I called and let them know I had since taken care of my doctor bills. They told me that my account was flagged for a late payment on my cell phone bill (this year I am fighting with verizon). Soooooooooo.... I talked to a local insurance agent who does the shopping for you because I got an excellent quote from geico on line. He told me that geico is famous for giving a deep discount the first year and making up for it in the following years. I am still undecided who to go with or if i should just stick with progressive. Esurance also gave me a favorable quote on line.
Being a police officer and working with many accidents it seems that many people are very satisfied with Progressive and it is probably the most popular insurance out there but it really takes some research to find a good rate.
Also I don't understand what someones credit history has to do with their car insurance and it really tweaks me. Good luck.

I don't know about cheapest but Amica ins. has been voted best all around Clark Howard says:

Aug 30, 2006 -- For auto insurance, go with top two
Insurance is one thing Clark doesn’t skimp on, and he doesn’t want you to either. You want your life insured with a financially solid company that will be around down the road when your family may need it. With life insurance, quality means financially strong. When it comes to car and home insurance, quality means that the company is there for you and does a good job. J.D. Power & Associates and Consumer Reports recently rated auto insurers, and both found two companies that are far better than any other company. There are good companies out there, but these two blow everyone away every year. They are USAA and Amica Mutual. USAA is only available to military personnel, their dependents and recent retirees. But Amica is open to everyone. You must qualify as a solid customer and you must have a good driving record. It’s tough to get in. But once you’re in, you will be very happy. So, which company is the worst? According to J.D. Power, AIG was the worst insurer. It’s one of the world’s largest insurers, but apparently its customers are not very satisfied. Just above was GMAC, Mercury and Allied. Clark was surprised by one of the lower ranked companies – Progressive. The company is known as being very smart and changing the insurance industry for the better. But again, its customers aren’t getting the service they want, according to the survey.
