How long can I stay under my parents’ auto insurance?
The automobile is under my mom’s name (it’s technically hers but I drive it), I live with her, and I am a student. I plan on purchasing the automobile from her once I graduate and getting my own insurance, but is there an age limit to how long someone can stay under their parents auto insurance?

No as long as its in her name and your listed as a driver on the policy you should be fine for a while.

It varies by the insurance company but generally 21 if you are a full time student and 18 if you are not.

Massachusetts, known for the highest auto insurance claim rate, now has a new system where auto insurance companies have been given the freedom to establish their own rates based on your driving records. Since this system removes the say government’s authority to set rates, we can look forward to more competitive premiums.

Yes, it is basically another term for a type of uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. It provides primary insurance coverage guaranteeing any bodily injury judgement awarded to you in an out of province lawsuit up to your limit of liability, or a maximum as outlined in the policy. Your exact terms might be slightly different. I am a licenced broker in Manitoba.

i bought a used car, and the used automobile dealer put in the contract that I was also purchasing auto insurance thru them…but i wuld get a refund of those premiums when I provided a copy of my own insurance. I never signed any other ionsurance forms with them. i did purchase my own insurance later. But, is it legal for the used automobile delaer to sell me insurance?

absoutely. Its called an insurance binder.

Furthermore, it IS illegal to sell you the automobile without insurance. So the choices were (1) sell you the automobile AND insurance, make a deal on both, or (2) Sell you neither insurance NOR the automobile and let the deal walk. Obviously they took the deal and so did you.

Why would you question whether this is legal or not?

They might have included this to make sure you are covered until you get other insurance, however it is suspicious because they did not discuss it with you first.
Whether or not it’s legal, it is pretty sleazy to put that in automatically.
They’re probably trying to get more money out of you.
Make sure you comprehend everything in the contract, as well as your alternatives before you concur to it.

Yes, but he can only sell you collision/comprehensive coverage. He does this to protect the lender in the event the automobile is wrecked before you get your regular insurance. He CAN NOT sell you liability coverage mandated by say law (I have no room here to explain why). Did you get your money back?

I have seen a case where a Finance Manager that worked for the dealership I managed did this very thing but forgot to fax the application to the insurance carrier (many carriers MUST receive the fax before the automobile leaves the dealership, though there are exceptions). The NEW automobile got totaled the very next day (Saturday). The finance manager remembered to fax the application Monday. The dealership ended up eating the car.

My auto insurance company did not inform me I did not have a valid drivers license (I did not know either) and sold me a policy. I got pulled over and lost my automobile because I was not informed. I want to sue the insurance company for selling me a policy they could not live up to because unlicensed drivers can’t be insured.

you can get all the legal advice your pocket will afford, however, in my many years with autos, it is not the insur. companies responsibility to check on your license. Any car can be insured with or without a valid license. I could even insure your vehicle, though it’s not in my name. you lost your car due to YOUR neglegence, not the insur. company’s. But you CAN simply check with your state’s dept. of motor cars for specific answers.

It will remove traffic points that you got from a ticket that you will be taking the test for but no for any in the past and as for the insurance, if you take the class for the last ticket you dont need to worry about your rates going up if you pass and stay clean but it wont lower your rates……

I was in a automobile accident. Can I have my physician bill my Health Ins Coverage so he can get paid faster and continue my care. If I bill the Auto ins it might take years before they settle and my physician is left holding the bag until the claim settles. Can my health ins pay then they can go after the auto insurance? Is there a TX say law that states who should be primary?

of course you can send it in to your health insurance, then the health insurance will bill the auto insurance. thats what they did for me after my automobile accident.

Insurance companies are a soft hit and do not impact the scoring.

Those are soft pulls, similar to if you check your own credit or if a potential employer pulls your credit. They do not negatively affect your credit score. Hope this helps!!

I have Progressive , but they will only cover 20miles in from the border. We are traveling all the way into Michoacan, so that will not help. There are many agencies that sell long and short term Mexican automobile insurance…and the prices vary widely. I am an American living in Mexico and use San Xavier Mexico Insurnce based in Arizona. Sanborn’s is another good company. They are not cheap but they have been in the business the longest and they are very good. Claims service is the ideal if you ever need them, and they have representatives all over Mexico.
