Question by e e in california:
Unsure about auto insurance law?
I got a great quote (liability only) from an agent who went through the huge auto insurance casualty company for my commercial vehicle. It’s nearly too good. It is more than half the price of the next lowest quote I found.

The thing is that the next lowest quote came from the same auto insurance casualty company but through a different agent. And, I have gotten other quotes through several different agents through the same casualty company.

I called the huge company directly and told them the situation. They told me that if he had the VIN of the car then there could be no problem as far as classification of the type of commercial vehicle.

My major concern is that should there be an accident, and this lower priced insurance that I am paying was not accurately quoted by the agent, am I liable for damages? Are there clauses in the paperwork or contracts that protect me from this situation? Will I be obligated to pay the balance of what I was misquoted if an accident occurs?

Answer by STEVE S
YOU SHOULD BE GOOD AS FAR AS LIABILITY COVERAGE IF YOU HAVE A VALID POLICY THRU AN AFFILIATED AGENT.
AS FAR AS OWING ANY ADDITIONAL PREMIUM ITS TOUGH TO SAY AS INSURANCE VARIES GREATLY FROM STATE TO STATE.
FOR LIABILITY ONLY THOUGH IT IS DOUBTFUL.
SHOULD YOU BE MAKING A COLLISION OR COMPREHENSIVE CLAIM IT MIGHT BE A DIFFERENT STORY.

Answer by Jared R
First off, you get what you pay for and secondly, if it seems to good to be true then it probably is. I would bump up to COMP and COLLISION as well in my opinion. I would also ask the agent for a copy of the policy itself , called a specimen policy, and comb through it very carefully. It will spell out what you will and will not be getting in the policy. If you are comfortable then yes, go for it. Be advised , anything not covered by the policy in theory could be charged back to you. I work for an insurance company and have seen people lives ruined by not having enough or the RIGHT TYPE of insurance. Bad things do happen to good people. I hope this helps.

My auto insurance company did not inform me I did not have a valid drivers license (I did not know either) and sold me a policy. I got pulled over and lost my automobile because I was not informed. I want to sue the insurance company for selling me a policy they could not live up to because unlicensed drivers can’t be insured.

Answer by JetDoc
You can get plenty of free legal advice right here on Yahoo! Answers, but remember…

Free Legal Advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Answer by granny racer
you can get all the legal advice your pocket will afford, however, in my many years with autos, it is not the insur. companies responsibility to check on your license. Any car can be insured with or without a valid license. I could even insure your vehicle, though it’s not in my name. you lost your car due to YOUR neglegence, not the insur. company’s. But you CAN simply check with your state’s dept. of motor cars for specific answers.

Question by Guiseppe:
Question about Automobile Insurance? This is crazy!?
I have a question about automobile insurance.

I was recently shopping around for quotes for automobile insurance. I had gotten an email about Washington Mutual Automobile Insurance, so I decided to get a quote. I was astounded when they quoted me with $ 2500 each 6 months or $ 5,000 a year. I was just absolutely blown away. My car, a 2004 Nissan Sentra, is barely even worth that much.

I called them up and asked why they were quoting me that rate and they stated it was because of my age and credit score. I am only 23 and I have really bad credit, but there is NO OTHER insurance company that quoted me a rate anything near as high as that.

Progressive quoted me $ 600 each 6 months or $ 1200 a year. Geico $ 613 each 6 months or $ 1200 a year. Allstate was $ 1,200 each 6 months or $ 2,400 a year. And Say Farm was $ 800 each 6 months, $ 1600 a year. These quotes were all for identical insurance policies.

I have never been in an accident, never been arrested, never been given a ticket for ANYTHING.

Does age and credit score make that much of a difference? That is insane, no one in their right mind would pay the full value of their automobile each year in insurance fees. What do you think?

——————————————

Answer by oh em gee, it’s paige
yes, your age and credit score do count a lot.

i worked at Allstate for nearly a year & a half and i saw it all the time. i think when it comes to age, they think about you an adult after age 24. it depends from company to company though.

Answer by Sugar
yes your age and credit score are the main thing they rely on to get your quote. younger automobile drivers are more likely to be involved/cause an accident and therefore more likely to claim.

Answer by mbrcatz
Were those quotes indications, or firm quotes? Did they run your credit score?

Yes, age and credit score make a HUGE impact in your rates. Unless you have got five DUI’s, credit score is MORE IMPORTANT than driving record – it’s a more accurate predictor of future losses.

Having stated that, the rate discrepancy is SO huge, that either only WM ran your credit score (and the others were, maybe, bait rates from an on the web rate comparison website?), or WM made a large mistake.

Now, if you were carrying “full coverage” on your car, and 23, and have a perfect driving record, I WOULD anticipate your policy to be running around $ 3,000 -$ 4,000 a year, depending on where you live.

But hey, if you went to www.progressive.com, and they DID the credit and mvr report checks, and it’s still $ 600 a half, GO FOR IT!

——————————————

Question by KrOnOmEnTrOpHoBiA:
Can anyone answer my question about my auto insurance policy?
okay, last december 2005 I was involved in a minor automobile accident due to weather conditions, and I had to pay my auto insurance company a “500 deductible” to repair the damages that I made to my vehicle, so they had fixed it. This august of 2007, I receive a letter from my insurance policy attorney stating that I am being sue by the plantiff of the automobile that I hit. Why I am being sued if I was cover by my insurance policy and the plantiff car, and is there anything I can do to defend myself. Because they should go after my insurance company if they did not pay for the plantiff car…. not me.

——————————————

Answer by oklatom
Perhaps the person you hit has damages that go beyond what your policy will cover. Perhaps the person you hit wants a bargaining chip. “I will drop my suit against your insured if you will pay me $ X,XXX.XX more.” Perhaps your insurance did pay, but they found an attorney that has promised to get them more. Bottom line, your insurance should supply you with an attorney if it reaches the point of actually going to court, so just make sure your insurance is aware of what is going on, and follow their advice.

Answer by la428282
Um.. clearly you didnt have enough coverage.

Lets say you select say minimum coverages (lets just pretend your says minimum are 10k for property damage.. and 10k for bodily injury) If you select say minimum.. you put yourself in this situation and there is only so much insurance can do.

If there damages were 15k for their car.. insurance will pay the 10k.. and you will be responsible for the rest.

If there medical bills etc were 25k…. and your insurance paid 10k.. your responsible for the rest.

Understand now? IF you have really high coverages… and your insurance SHOULD be covering you.. maybe they dont know your being sued. call them asap and they will defend you to the ideal of their ability.

Answer by Eddie J
If your ins. comp. is a reputable one, they have to notify you of any activity concerning your policy. They will consequently “go to bat” for you when it comes to lawyers and court hearings. So it would be ideal for you to contact your agent Whit any questions concerning this matter. As I stated, if your insurance carrier is reputable, you should not have to worry. You might find that the statute of limitations has expired depending on your say or country which you reside.

——————————————

Answer by fishstix
Unitrin is actually a very good company. They are up-and-coming in the auto insurance industry. They also gave me the ideal rate, and I have been searching for a new company for a long time. You will hear more about them in the future, they are actually in the process of buying the auto insurance company that I work for. They will end up being pretty huge eventually.

Answer by foxychick24
In my personal experience I have not heard the ideal remarks about Unitrin. Now please keep in mind I work in the insurance industry and I get a call for a quote when someone is unhappy with their insurance company OR their premium is too high.

The person that switched to the company I work for, from Unitrin saved about $ 200 annually. I was also advised that there was a claim that he had with them that took months to finalize and he was not happy with the claims handling service.

Each insurance company that is out there has people that are not pleased with them, and I was talking of MY personal experience and what I was advised.

Heres is a link that mainly supports what I have heard of unitrin and it even rates that only 19% are extremely satisfied, 14% very satisfied, 19% Somewhat satisfied, 11 % unsatisfied, and a WHOPPING 36% VERY UNSATISFIED http://insurance.freeadvice.com/reviews/130/

Here’s another website that rates Unitrin as 1 out of 5 stars:

I got a great quote (liability only) from an agent who went through the huge auto insurance casualty company for my commercial vehicle. It’s nearly too good. It is more than half the price of the next lowest quote I found.

The thing is that the next lowest quote came from the same auto insurance casualty company but through a different agent. And, I have gotten other quotes through several different agents through the same casualty company.

I called the huge company directly and told them the situation. They told me that if he had the VIN of the car then there could be no problem as far as classification of the type of commercial vehicle.

Question by :
are employers required to inform independent contractors about commercial auto insurance?
i was just in a major auto collision and now my insurance is trying to deny coverage because they think i was on a delivery for my employer at the time. supposedly all delivery drivers need a special commercial insurance. i did not know this. is my employer required to tell me if im an independent contractor?

——————————————

Answer by knowitall
As an independent contractor you are responsible for knowing what the regulations are. Also, as an independent, you do not have an employer. You are self employed. No one is required to tell you that you must pay your own taxes and FICA, either.

Answer by wg0z
if you are truly an independent contractor you have no employer; you have a client. Your client will not and must not attempt to tell you how to do your work; it’s your own responsibility.

Answer by mbrcatz
Correct. There is an absolute exclusion in each personal auto policy, if you are using your vehicle, to make deliveries for work. This is most commonly seen with pizza delivery related accidents.

If you are an independent contractor, then you are responsible to have all your own insurance. You’d get paid without taxes being withheld from your check.

Even if you are an employee, you are still responsible for YOUR insurance on YOUR car, your employer is not responsible.

It’s not up to your employer to make sure you read your policy to know what is covered. It’s up to YOU.

The REASON pizza joints hire other people to deliver pizzas, is because delivery insurance is REALLY expensive, and they had like to foist that cost off on someone else. Sorry.

Question by ed07:
How do i answer this question about automobile insurance?
My sister and i are on the loan for a automobile that I am driving. We have insurance but im not on it. I want to put it under my name now, but when i get a quote on the web they ask if i’ve been insured for the past 2 or3 years i dont know what to say. Yes because the automobile HAS been insured or no because it was not under my name. Can i even get insurance if her name is on the loan too??
Thanks in advance

——————————————

Answer by ep1909
See the progressive Lady

Answer by The Eagle Keeper
Get your sister to add you as a secondary driver to her policy. Much much cheaper that way. Then later on when your asked this question again, you can state yes.

Answer by matt83840
No, the question is whether you have had insurance it has nothing to do with your automobile your insuring, they want to see if you are a first time insurer or have insurance or where dropped by another company. if you state yes then you personally will have to have bought insurance before & with out dropping it before buying new insurance. Hope this helps, insurance does suck, but you need it.

——————————————

Answer by mdel
check Progressive- I am in my 20′s and I just got my own auto insurance for the 1st time- they gave me the ideal rate.

Answer by tggrbounce9
Where do you live? You really have not given us much to go on.

Answer by Mommyof3
I just recently switched to Progressive and then someone hit the side of my van. They were wonderful. I never had to go out of my way to get it taken care of. They have a place to drop it off and they give you a rental automobile right there. They called once a day to update me on my van. It was really nice. We also had a claim that was my husbands fault and they were just as nice about that as they were about the one that was not our fault. Customer service is priceless. Some companies let that part of business fall through the cracks, but Progressive really focuses of Customer Service.
