Question by Joe B:
What to do when your Auto Insurance Agent calls you up and cries on the phone and threatens you, Do you change
Agents or the Insurance Co?

I filled out a questionare rating how pleased I was with the service from my Insurance Agent, I gave him low marks cause he told me he would raise my auto insurance if I did not purchase homeowners and life insurance from him.
So I wrote that down on the questionare and the Corporate seen that and he nearly lost his job
next he calls me up, and cries like a baby and told me if he loses his business or his job I am the one to blame
What would you do?

——————————————

Answer by William W
Ignore him; tell him to get a life and stop bothering you. He caused his own problems. You gave the company the honest feedback that they were looking for. If he continues, report this to the company. If all else fails selected another insurance company and/or report the harassment to the police.

Answer by entidtil
You were asked for your view of his service, you gave your view of his service. How he reacted is his problem, not yours. Perhaps he learned, he cannot go around threatening his clients.
Ignore him and/or switch agents

Answer by mooncheery2002
Don’t accept the blame. You were being honest. This person is not being honest with himself. Nothing you can do. He needs to work it out for himself. Do not take another call.

Question by Lifesucks2333:
How can I become an independent insurance agent for automobile and life insurance?
I know I need licenses, clients etc but can someone tell me how can I get a system or something to give people quotes? I do not want to work for any insurance company. I want to quote insurance from multiple sources how do I do that?

——————————————

Answer by es
You will have to meet with different general brokers and become licensed to sell their products. You will need a separate license for each line. You will need a personal and load the software to be able to quote. Or, you can go to work for an independent broker and use his resources. Good luck to you. If you are really interested in doing this, call some of the massive independent brokers in your area and ask for an interview. They are always looking for producers.

Answer by james_e_moran
Well, simply put, you need a location, at least 1 year of operating money, P/C license, Business License, good computer, printer (with scanner preferred), filing cabinets, among others. Some good software to use that provides rates for multiple companies is call Accu-Auto. Apart from that, you definitely need some elbow grease (lol).

Answer by fth106
It is next to impossible to begin your own bureau without having a lot of insurance experience. There are regulations that are hard for long time agents to stay in compliance with. You could not possibly know all of them and keep out of trouble with your state’s commissioners office.

Go to work for an independent agent in your area. Learn the ropes of writing and servicing policies. If you really like the business, learn your state’s regulations regarding the operation of an agency. By then, you will have a good idea of the fixtures, equipment and so many other things that you will need to open your own agency.

Another option is to buy and existing agency.

——————————————

Question by Jaymie:
Will my insurance agent know about my ticket?
I am buying a automobile sometime this month and will be getting it insured with my dad. The problem is, I recieved a ticket and points on my license the other day for running a stop sign while driving my friend’s car. I would like to know if I take the On the web Basic Driver Improvement Course, will my insurance agent not find out about the ticket? Will the BDI erase all records of my traffic violations? I would not want my father knowing about it either way.

——————————————

Answer by Ashley D
The BDI doesn’t erase the ticket, it just reduces the effect is has on your record. You agent will probably find out about the ticket. If you do not want you father to know, call the agent beforehand and tell them you had a ticket, took the BDI (which should reduce the insurance cost), but do not want your father to know. They might be able to help you.

Answer by Daniel C
It’s up to the judge as to whether or not taking defensive driving will help. At this moment the ticket has not gone to court, right? Or did you go plead guilty and pay for it? Insurance only finds out when they run your record and it only shows on the record if it was finalized in court.

Answer by dick automobile guy
By now, you should recognize you are too old to be running around like some 12 year old hiding secrets from daddy, part of life, is accepting and learning from your mistakes, instead of basing your relationship to father on deceptions and lies as you dance on your tippytoes (are you a ballerina?) act like a man, and admit your mistakes, it is so much easier, than you accidentally forgetting you forgot to tell dad, then forgetting you forgot to forgot to tell him anyway, so admit it, move on with your life, as long as you complete traffic school, nothing will appear on your dmv record, the only thing an insurance company can access about your driving is a dmv record ok? Be an adult, admit mistakes, do not do it again, if you did it by accident admit it, if you did it being a smart ass (and in front of a cop, you deserved the ticket)

——————————————

Question by teens_us:
Want to be an auto insurance agent?
I am from WA say and I want to get auto insurance agent license because I want to work on a insurance related school project.

I am ready to appear for the exam but WA say requires affiliation or sponsorship from an Insurance Agency. Considering I am not planning to sell auto insurance how can I approach an auto insurance bureau and request them to vouch for me so that I can get agent license?
Ok let me explain a bit more in detail. The school insurance project might turn into a commercial one and having a license is required in that case. I need to be an agent so that I can advise people about auto insurance.
I looked at the WA website it states if you want to be an agent (Advise people on auto insurance) you need a license

http://www.insurance.wa.gov/industry/licensing/application-procedures.asp

To get an license you need affiliation/appointment

——————————————

Answer by mbrcatz17
If you do not plan on selling insurance, you do not need a license. Period.

I just checked the WA say website. You need an APPOINTMENT in order to sell insurance, WITH your license. Apparently you do not need the appointment to GET the license, but without an appointment, the license by itself is not going to do you any good.

SO. You can take the education courses you need to take, pay your testing fee, take the test, pass it, pay the licensing fee . . . and do exactly WHAT with the license? Nothing, because you cannot sell insurance without an appointment, and you cannot ADVISE without a broker’s license.

An AGENCY cannot sponsor you. A COMPANY has to sponsor you. HUGE difference. NO ONE is going to sponsor you, unless you are going to work for them.

Answer by

——————————————
thinking of making career move. I have worked in the mortgage industry, which is not doing so well. But a lot of empolyers in the auto insurance world have been contacting me. Can you make great income.

——————————————

Answer by bronzediva
Probably. Especially if you work for a money gouging company like Farmers.

Answer by fth106
If you make the move to insurance, you can make a great deal of money if you are willing to work hard. You will want to make sure that any producer agreement you enter into spells out exactly what your responsibilities are and what split of commission you will receive, both on new sales and renewals. I made exponentially more money on renewals than on new sales. That is because I treated my clients with respect and they stayed with me. When I retired, I had clients that I had had since the first year I was in the business. I cannot even envision how much money I made from their loyalty to me.

Your income will begin out low, but it will build if you are a good agent and will not give up. The most difficult years are the first five. After that, your renewals and referrals will keep you going.

Answer by mbrcatz17
You basically go to the CA insurance department website, take a test, pay a fee, and voila, you have your license. THEN, you have to find a company willing to let you write their insurance, which is much harder than the first part.

Question by northfloridarep:
Are licensed independent insurance agent required to have an physical bureau location to sell for ins carriers
I’m a Florida 220 General Lines Licensed Agent.

I’m seeking to offer a simpler way of shopping for auto insurance by providing the cheapest auto insurance quotes from top 15 insurance companies to consumers via my website.

The completion of the application will take less than five minutes. We will match the consumers application to all affiliated insurance companies. Then our system will show the lowest rates out of those fifteen for you. After you compare automobile insurance rates you will be given the option to buy a low cost policy online.

I would like to get set up with the following insurance companies: Progressive, GEICO, AIG, Arrowhead, Electric, Encompass, Esurance, The Hartford, Liberty Mutual, MetLife, Permanent General, Safeco, Travelers, and Unitrin.

By comparing rates from a broad list of companies we will improve the consumers chances of purchasing the cheapest insurance.

——————————————

Answer by mbrcatz17
Yes, you must have a physical address. You are not going to get a company to appoint you without it, and you are not going to be able to get an bureau license without it. You also need to have regular business hours, and show them how you are going to SERVICE the policies.

Your system is not going to work, I truly believe, because it doesn’t take the credit scoring or MVR into account. Just like all the other on the web rating engines there are out there, it will give an INDICATION. You cannot afford to pay $ 10 for each MVR, and $ 3 x 15 carriers ($ 45) for the scoring to get an accurate QUOTE. That will cost you $ 55 per quote, regardless of whether or not the person BUYS from you!!

Geico is a direct seller only, so you are not going to get an appointment from them, no matter what you do.

Great idea, theoretically. Not going to work, though, in the real world.

Answer by aaron p
Sure you need an address, but most do not care if you are working out of your home or not.

You sound like you need to write a business plan (try www.sba.gov and www.score.org as starting resources). There are other companies that already do this (not the least of which is Progressive that sells a different contracts on the web than through the brokerage system), so the section about competition and marketing will be critical. You should also either be realistic about the cost of the site creation, data management, CRM, and so on, or you need to have the skills to program and maintain the whole thing yourself.

If there are package deals where you can just subscribe to a quoting system and pick a template to wrap around it with your company name, this is a clear indication that the bones of the business are not unique. If that is the case, can you do your own SEO, why would a shopper select you instead of someone else? what is your one-of-a-kind selling proposition? how are you allocating your advertising budget?

I’m not saying it cannot be done, in fact you could be raking money in before too long, but a detailed and researched business plan is your opportunity to work out the wrinkles. Failing miserably because you could not track the conversion ratio of each marketing campaign would suck.

——————————————
I just bought a car and I have not had a car in a while. Usually I’d get insurance from an agent in an office. I usually get a pretty good deal, but a lot of people are doing things on the web now for the convenience. What should I do?
