Question by cheapskatsh:
Can you name a place in so. California where I can buy minimum legal auto liability insurance?
I would be greatly obliged if you did not limit your answer to something like “contact your insurance agent”.

For one, I do not have one yet, that is part of the problem. I currently have neither a automobile nor insurance. For my first car, I want to buy a automobile from one of the many people selling their used automobiles in my metropolitan area. But without insurance, I cannot drive the automobile home or even test drive it.

I would like to buy the minimum liability insurance that is required by California law BEFORE I select and buy a automobile so that way I can go to nearby cities test driving cars, and drive back the one I buy.

I have tried shopping on the web for insurance. I went to all the insurance companies that are on Television plus several others. I came across two issues 1) they base the insurance on what type of automobile you have, and I do not know which one I am going to get yet, 2) they want to sign me up for complete automobile and driver’s insurance, even though they claim to let me customize my plans.

I do not qualify for the say liability insurance for low income drivers.

Can you specifically name a place where I can walk in and buy only auto liability insurance?

——————————————

Answer by Reid
I do not know of any company that will issue you a policy without knowing what kind of automobile you will be driving. How could they?

Some auto dealers will make you buy insurance (from the company of your choice) before you leave the lot, I guess it’s a potential liability for them. I ran into this and it was annoying.

Private sellers, on the other hand, do not generally care if you have insurance. Once they have the money and sign over the pink slip, it’s not their problem. I would not worry too much about driving a automobile home un-insured and arranging a policy once you get home. They will generally take effect the same day or at midnight the following morning, so the chances of you having an incident in that few hours is pretty slim!

If you are truly paranoid, call the insurance company of your choice from the seller’s location before you leave and buy a policy. It only takes about 10 minutes and they can arrange it to be effective immediately and fax/email you the insurance docs. This is what I did at the dealership. As a side-note, I have generally found that calling the company is faster than trying to do it online. Just a tip.

As for the amount of coverage, I am not sure I comprehend your complaint. I had no problem buying a “legal minimum” policy on the web from Geico. If you are having issues with the world wide web sites, pick a company, call them and say that you want a “legal minimum liability-only” policy. Yes, they might try to sell you more coverage because that is what they are in the business of doing. If you do not want it, do not buy it.

Answer by mustanger
Without a automobile they cannot quote you a rate or sell you insurance. It’s based on the type of automobile and written against the specific automobile not the driver. Test driving the automobiles is fine as the owner should have it insured. Then when you find the one you want to buy take the information to an agent and buy insurance against it in your name.

Answer by oklatom
To start with, if you do not have a car, you cannot get insurance on a car, since it goes with the vehicle, not with the driver. So if you are test driving, it’s with the owners permission and you are covered under his policy.

As to the second part, where to go when you do want to get insurance and are buying a car: You walk into the office of any local independent agent, and he will be able to assist you.

——————————————

Question by April:
What is the lowest, ideal Liability auto Insurance in California ?
I just got a Pt Cruiser that automobile dealership if offering 70.00 to insure the automobile however I do need liability insurance any one know of a good web site were I can compare some quotes instead of calling around or speaking to a pushy insurance agent ?
I’m not really looking for a debate just a web site thank you !

——————————————

Answer by Ginger
Wow! If you think comparing rates on the web and not speaking with a licensed expert is the way to go, more power to you.

There is no such thing as “the lowest, ideal liability auto insurance”. That is different for each individual. It absolutely depends on your credit (and they do not run that for on the web quotes), your driver record (also not ran for on the web quotes), your age, the different coverages you select (which, without the education or license, you have no idea what you are choosing and how it will affect you when you have a claim).

Many quotes you get on the web are mostly temporary quote estimates and once the policy is written, then renewed, you will see what the real premium will be.

I hope you never have a claim, but if you do, good luck handling it on the web without one of those “pushy insurance agents”.

Answer by Flower
Insurance agents are not pushy. It is superior than making a decision from a data base. You should speak to a live agent.

I have CSAA and I find they are the lowest for automobile insurance.

Answer by car253
Well I am not a pushy insurance agent and I would give you my info but it is against the rules to solicit on this website.

And, believe me when you really need some service, or some serious help in a claim a real live insurance agent is very helpful to have. I do not know any insurance agents that are pushy. They are nice and kind because they want their business. If you find one that is not then just hang up.

Call around and get some live quotes and you might just get some free advice along the way. Insurance Agents are very valuable people and are there to help if you need it. But you do need to find a good agent and one that you are confortable with. So, call around and find one.

——————————————

Answer by Nathan W
I heard somewhere there was a ballot initiative in California which banned this practice. Sorry I was not able to find a source for this.

Answer by Baby #1 on 12/10/08
I’ve never had my credit run when getting an auto insurance policy. I doubt most companies find it necessary since the premiums are paid up front at the begin of the policy and at the time of each renewal.

Answer by Corrine E
I advocate you locate a local automobile insurance agent to help. Since I live in North Dakota I cannot advocate anyone in California, but here is an website that can help you. http://www.easyautoinsuranceguide.com/California-Car-Insurance.html

Question by Automotive Maniac:
What would be an estimate for auto insurance on a 16 year old male living in California?
I recently got my license and am looking at auto insurances. Can someone find me a quote (or at least give me an idea) for a 16 year old male living in California. The automobile would be a 2WD 1985 Corvette. I also have a clean record if that helps at all. Thanks!

——————————————

Answer by risky.bidness
A lot!

Easy $ 100 a month.

Answer by ken k
you cant purchase insurance on your own/need to go on parents policy /call their agent and get the real story

Answer by DANIEL
Around $ 150/mo, but if you are more specific, you can get a superior deal. You should research patiently, and get quotes from different insurers -take your time. A used car, and a clean driving record will definitively help you have lower rates. I had to do a lot of research and estimates because my old automobile broke, so I ended up leasing a new Honda, and insurance in NJ is ridiculously expensive. It is worth to wait and have multiple options first. I strongly advocate this website that offers free quotes by e-mail; it is different from others because it is affiliated with just 4 excellent companies, so when you fill its simple form, it will process your estimates directly to the insurers (there will be no extra agents or unwanted stranger phone calls). The website is called savingdrivers.com
It’s also worth to try more companies independently like Say Farm, or Progressive. Hope this will help you.

Question by alana hartmann:
Question About Reopening a Traffic Case: Traffic School Riverside County California? *10 Points* ASAP?
I got a traffic ticket in Temecula, Ca which is a part of Riverside county. I paid the fine as well as extra for Traffic School without going to court. I did this all on the web through the Better Court of California. They were suppose to send me the additional information on when to begin and how to complete the course to get the ticket removed from my record. I never got the information and to be honest I forgot until I got the insurance bill and my auto rate jumped $ 100 for loosing my good driver discount. I went to the Traffic Court and they stated I needed to write a letter asking the judge to re-open my case. I am unsure about what it should state and what needs to all be in it. Can someone please answer all three questions below? 10 Points!
What should the letter say?
How should I format it?
Is they any good web forms?
Thank you!

——————————————

Answer by Earl Guerrero
I’m not sure if anyone can solve this question with the info you are telling us. You should describe a tiny more so that we can help with more confidence. Just a thought!

Answer by John S
There is no form for this. You should write it just as a business letter. Explain that you signed up for traffic school and paid the fee, but never received the information you were told would be sent to you concerning how to complete traffic school. Ask that the judgment of conviction be vacated and that you be granted to complete traffic school. I would recommend NOT mentioning that you forgot about it. There is no guarantee that the judge will do this, but it could be worth a shot since they already have your money.

Question by Obsessed VQ and L28 Fan:
Car Insurance for a 16 year old in California?
I am gonna get either a Used 03-04 Nissan 350z and would like to get a rough estimate of how much insurance is gonna cost. Thanks in advance. Also what would happen to my insurance if the automobile is on a salvage title?

——————————————

Answer by G35_Tuner
your 16 and your gonna get a 350z?
lets put it this way…

i drive a 98 honda prelude. i was added on insurance when i was 17 and for liability only, my parents insurance went up $ 600ish a year. for full coverage their insurance increased nearly $ 1,000. On a 350z, at the age of 16, just know its probably going to be upwards of $ 800 a year on top of your parents existing insurance. (and that might be liability only)

also, if your automobile is salvaged title, most automobile insurance companies wont do more than liability coverage. This means that in the event that you hit someone else, your insurance pays for the damage to the automobile you hit, but you pay for the damage you did to your own automobile because that is not covered for a salvaged.

Answer by Designate a Driver if you Drink!
In CA, registering an auto with a salvaged title is a pain in the arss. You will need to have it weighed, smogged, inspected and the money it will cost will depend on the purpose of the salvaged title.

Insurance on the car if you go on your parents insurance will run you about $ 180-600 depending on your parents length of time with insurance and if they have home owners policy etc…

What city are you in? If you are in the EAST BAY/Northern Cal. I can give you a few names to call.

Answer by nightroddude
Very costly for someone like you with no driving experience.

——————————————

Answer by PamelaS
No.
In Nevada, you are required to get a NV license within 30 days and register your automobile within 60 days.

Answer by David W
PamelaS is right, and that will require a Nevada insurance ID card.

Answer by Joy
car-insurance.22web.net – try this one. I personally have their automobile insurance, cause it is the cheapest for me in our area.

Question by vestiti_junkie:
What is the cheapest automobile insurance in california?
My parents will not even think about getting me insurance because they think it’s too expensive.
I’m a girl, 16, gonna be 17 in October, and have above 3.0 GPA
My automobile is a 1996 (i think?) toyota camry.

——————————————

Answer by StanS
You have a automobile without insurance?
…or is it your parents car?

They think it’s too expensive?
What is to think?
Call the insurance company and find out! They will be more than happy to tell you (or your parents) how much it’ll cost to add you to the policy.

It could be that they already called, but are finding excuses cause they do not want you driving yet.
Show (don’t tell!) them how grown up you are.

I do not think a 3.0 GPA qualifies for a goos student discount, but you can and should assume it does till you find out otherwise.

Good luck.

Answer by liz
I would recommend that you get a quote with as many companies as possible such as Safeco, Mercury, Geico, and also go trough a small insurance agency

Answer by Sam007
I would recommend the auto club (AAA).
However, you are too young to be on your own policy. An insurance policy involves an application which is a legal binding document that you can not enter into unless you are 18. You will have to be added on to your parents policy and most likely the insurance company will not provide you a quote for the additional cost; your parents will have to call
You do qualify for a good student discount as long as you maintain a 3.0 GPA and stay in school full time. Also, let your parents know that insurance is less pricey for females than for males. Good Luck!
