Question by ishmestephanie:
Did anyone else know that automobile insurance companies run your credit?
My boyfriend and I were thinking of moving. We are both on our parents insurance and what not so I was just running quotes to see what the rates would be like, and it asked me for my social… What the heck does your FICO have to do with getting automobile insurance? I dont really see a correlation between your credit score and getting into an accident…

——————————————

Answer by rottendog93
But they do, and you are trying to do business with them.
Deadbeats usually do not pay any bills on time.

Answer by oklatom
It’s no secret they run your credit. They are looking for risk factors that would increase your premium, and having a poor credit rating has been shown to increase the risk to the insurance.

Of course, you are not required to give out your social security number, but if you don’t, they can decline to insure you.

Likewise, your employment can also affect it. A bookkeeper would be less risk than a police officer for example.

Added: afterthought. Also it will decide if you can make payments, or if they want the whole thing paid up front.

Answer by sideboom
just stay on your parents plan until you get on your feet. your parents can do a credit check on their own plan( for you),to see how well you score with the company.

——————————————

Question by Coop’s Wife:
Why do auto insurance companies have such large differences in premiums?
We have 3 cars and 4 drivers. All drivers have clean driving records. 2 of the cars have full coverage and the other has liability. Allstate is charging us $ 1300.00 for 6 months. I have been shopping around and Geico would only charge $ 550.00 for 6 months for the same coverages. I have other quotes from other companies that are approximately $ 700.00 for 6 months. Farmer’s Insurance is the most expensive. They want $ 1500.00 for 6 months. Why is there such a difference in premiums?

——————————————

Answer by tison28s
I pay the same amount no matter what insurance company i get for premium, i mean i think it’s too much, its all a ripoff.

Answer by mitch9262002
Because each company has their own underwriting guidelines. Age of drivers and types of cars carry different impacts on premiums. Discounts and insurance scoring could play a part

Answer by renni1010
they rate policies in groups, or tiers.

if all 4 of you fall into ‘one’ category driving history wise, and all 3 cars fall into ‘one’ category ‘year, type, value’ etc. wise then you’d get more similar premiums.

but, i am guessing that all 4 of you do not fall into one category and the 3 cars do not either, therefore you are getting quotes from 4 different companies and they all have different rating structures and tiers, so therefore you will get entirely different premiums as the outcome.

——————————————
drive a 98 camero

——————————————

Answer by PamelaS
It varies from company to company. Each company sets up their rate plan (the mathematical formula they use to compute your premium) differently, giving different values to different factors. One company might favor older drivers, one younger, another might be set up to favor only the very safest drivers. You have to compare different companies to make sure you have the right fit. If the agent you are meeting with is an independent agent, he or she can compare several companies for you. If they only deal in one company, I advocate some comparison shopping before you sign anything.

Answer by Diesel Fingers
If you own your automobile you can get liability only, that will halve your premium.
You can also shop around for the ideal price, and shave another 30% or more, depending how deep your search is.
I use

Question by tmcganey:
Who is the governing body that regulates auto insurance companies?
What are the stipulations to be an auto insurance provider. Not an agent but a company that actually writes policies

——————————————

Answer by frediwhite@verizon.net
At their insistence, insurance companies are regulated by the states, so there are 50 agencies. That makes it easier for the firms to influence legislation compelling to do what they want to do anyway so they can tell the consumer “We have to do it this way, it’s the law.”

Answer by Mary L
Insurance companies are licensed to do business in the says where they write policies. Those licenses are issued by the various say governments, often by a separate division in the executive branch and named the Department of Insurance or something similar. There are various say laws and administrative rules that outline how the company can operate, how much money they are required to have in “reserves” (to pay claims), non-discrimination, etc. A company might decide for various reasons not to provide certain kinds of insurance in the says where they are licensed, but can’t select to sell policies where they are not licensed. (Agents are also licensed by the state.)

Answer by mbrcatz
Each say insurance department regulates companies.

Requirements include having a HUGE amount of cash reserves, and legal policy forms.

——————————————

Question by :
Is a Toyota solora camry convertible a sports automobile to auto insurance companies?
Not including the bad insurance companies like geico, progressive, and safe auto because they base your price on age and record. I mean the companies who base it on automobile type ect. And help with full coverage mostly in the businesses.
Even though the engine is a v6 compared to the regular camry being a v4

——————————————

Answer by Paula
No, It might have 2 doors but it is a huge fat camry

Answer by Terrence B
No. Think about the Solara Toyota’s answer to the Chrysler Sebring convertible. Like the first answer said, you will be insuring a fat Camry. There is nothing even remotely exciting about a Solara… convertible or not. It’s the perfect open air automobile for old people. BTW, The Solara was discontinued 2-3 years ago for a reason. My guess is that it’s buyer demographic is starting to die off. In case you were wondering, I do not hate Toyotas……. I happen to only drive Toyotas.
