Answer by awakeatdawn
No you do not have to have it to drive legally, but it can be useful in some areas. If you are in an accident with someone who does not have liability insurance (illegal to drive this way) Uninsured motorist coverage will pay for the damages. If you do not have this coverage, and they do not have insurance, you are stuck paying for the damage yourself. You can always try to sue, but you can only take money if they have money. This insurance will pay for your bills if you are harmed in an accident with an uninsured motorist. Only you can decide if it is worth it.

Answer by la428282
only like the MOST IMPORTANT COVERAGE EVER! You know how many people drive uninsured? Well, if one of those people hit you.. and you are seriously hurt.. this is the coverage that will take care of you. It is incredibly risky and stupid not to have it. Ive seen hundreds of people screwed over… and hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt.. b/c they didnt have this.

Answer by butwhatdoIno?
Oh yeah. And it also can deny if you are drinking, racing, showing off, doing stunts…etc. They do not want to pay out at all – that applies to all of them.

Answer by ME
it depends… the policy might specifically exclude coverage if it can be determined that no seat belt was worn. if it states it in the policy, then yea, they can deny coverage.

Answer by George D
Unless your policy covered other people driving your automobile (or the other persons insurance covered other automobiles they are driving), then they probably will not pay you anything anyway.

If your friend was not wearing his seatbelt, and bounced his head off the windshield or was injured, then they probably will not pay you even if you had coverage for them driving it.

Question by QueAndAy:
Auto Insurance coverage — How much Liability and Medical?
I got a couple of questions about about auto insurance coverage. Namely, what is the ideal amount of liability and medical coverage to select. 1) For the liability, I know it’s wise to get the ideal liability that one can afford to cover your assets. But how about if one also gets umbrella coverage. For example, if one gets an umbrella coverage at a $ 2 million limit and the liability limit for the auto insuarance is $ 300,000 or $ 500,000, does it make sense to choose the $ 500,000 or is it superior to choose the $ 300,000 limit since the umbrella coverage would kick in? 2) for medical, is this redundant coverage and not needed because would not the liability portion also cover medical expenses? Or is it wise to get this, for example, if a passenger is not insured (no health insurance), so the medical part would help out in that case?

Thanks.

——————————————

Answer by Nate W
1)Each company will have a minimum limit of liability for each type of policy that the umbrella covers. In my company for instance, the umbrella requires 250,000/500,000 in liability coverage for autos. It would be redundant to add more b/c the umbrella will kick in on any claims higher than 250,000/500,000. Find out what the minimum amount of liability is for your company and set it there.

2)Edit* Sorry to change my answer, but I realized that really this really varies say to say and did not want to give you bad advice. An insurance agent in your say will be able to give you a much more accurate answer than you will find here.

Personal Umbrella Policies or PUPs are fantastic for anyone with assets over $ 500,000. By nature they are fairly comprehensive and extremely inexpensive for the coverage they offer.
Hope this helps!

Answer by ltlrthquakes
1 – liability coverage is very cheap. The difference between the 300 and the 500 is probably only dollars a year.

When you begin an umbrella policy, the insurance company has certain limits that you have to have. Usually it is the highest that they have – (ie 25, 50, 100, 300, 500). They wont cover you until the first part has been attained – ie if they want you to have a limit of 500K and yours is only 300K they wont cover you until you hit the 500. (you would be responsible for the difference). I am sure you have a respectable agent that would ensure that you are adequately covered to prevent this from happening.

As for the medical coverage – this would cover passengers in your automobile etc… There would also be a threshold that you would have to meet prior to the umbrella policy picking up the tab. I would advocate getting this coverage because it, like liability, is also very cheap.

Question by CJ:
If I get a general loanfrom Fifth Third Bank, do I have to have full coverage auto insurance?
I’m looking to buy a 1998 Grand Prix GT for $ 2700 and looking to take out a loan to do it. I am not getting an auto loan, but instead a general loan. I was wondering if anyone knows if I will need to have full coverage insurance on the automobile while I am repaying the loan? Thanks.

——————————————

Answer by steph
Its up to the bank. My guess is that since the amount owed is so low – no – but that doesn’t mean they cannot require it.

Answer by Eliza
If you are using the automobile as collateral you will have to have full coverage. If you are just taking out an unsecured personal loan then you will not need full coverage. Think about what will happen if the automobile is totaled will you be able to make the loan payments and afford to buy new transportation? You might want to but full coverage even if they do not require it while you still have the loan.

Question by Candy:
Is it true that if you have full coverage insurance on a rental car… (please look inside)?
They cannot ban you from renting from there for the rest of your life?

OK. Back in 2005, I rented a automobile from Enterprise with FULL coverage insurance.

1 day I was on my way to school because I had a deadline to turn in a research paper that was 30% of our grade, & my sister 2x my age locked me in the home on purpose & thought it was funny. I got in the car, & drove it to school, & I panicked & got into a wreck & the automobile crashed into a little tree on the median. It was only a fender bender. But the company tried to state it was totaled for over $ 2,000 worth of damage. Everyone else who saw, stated it was a fender bender. The twigs got inside the light on the left side of the front of the car. But that could’ve easily been fixed. Not sure. But the wheel alignment was messed up. Does that mean the automobile is totaled? What does TOTAL a automobile mean? That it could not be fixed?

Well, I was just speaking about it today, & a lot of people on the web had ganged up on me & attacked me. Now I am feeling sad & hurt. About to cry. & they were calling me dumb, irresponsible, etc. Very hostile & angry @ me. They act like I wrecked THEIR “personal” car! People get into accidents all the time. Anxiety disorder or not.

& they were saying that since I had full coverage, I shouldn’t have been banned. & they were saying my story did not make sense. But people look for any & each reason to discriminate against me. It’s not fair.

——————————————

Answer by hairhorn
$ 2000 damage =/= totalled

Answer by Ang P
No, usually rental automobiles only covers 3rd celebration insurance, which means it does not covers you who is the leasee. www.cars4rent.com.sg , they used to publish something on motor rental insurance in their website, not sure if its still there

——————————————

Question by mary:
how do you know if your auto insurance is full coverage? my automobile is financed and i’m checking on geico.com?
i’m getting insurance quotes and normally i call and speak to someone and just state i was full coverage. i’m on geico.com and that is not an option. they will let me choose bodily injury liability and i checked the box that stated i was financing my automobile so maybe they give me full coverage no matter what then

——————————————

Answer by matt543
if you have a automobile loan the insurance knows to make it full coverage because the bank requires it.

Answer by kelly_f_1999
if your making payments on a loan most like it wil be and then you cant miss the high cost of it either or just by reading your card or papers will state it and even could call your company and ask for it

Answer by Paul L
It does I just purchased insurance with them. You can also call them and give them the quote number so they can just look up your info and tell you what coverage you have.

i need full coverage but i got a bad driving record i want to atleast pay 1000-1200 each 6 months. Who is the best, please let me know. I have tried quotes on the web but there are killing me.

——————————————

Answer by Queen B
stay away from on the web quotes. they are hardly ever correct. call a local independent agent. they will quote it for free. they write for a lot of companies and can find you the ideal coverage at the ideal rate. some specialize in people with bad driving records.

Question by Scotty:
allstate automobile insurance question – broken window and coverage?
okay heres the deal. i had liability and collision on my suv. did not have comprehensive. this day my rear window got broken. called allstate and they stated i did not have glass coverage and that was only under comprehensive. i signed up for comprehensive this day and it will go into effect in 24 hours.

so if i call them in the next few days and tell them that the window broke will they replace it under that coverage? or is there a designated waiting period? dont go blabbing about insurance fraud because i wont do it unless it is legal. i will obviously be looking at my policy on the web but wanted to throw this out here to the yahoo answer community and see what you think. all USEFUL and RELATIVE answers are appreciated. thanks!!!

——————————————

Answer by Gophuk Yerselv
Seriously? Did you seriously just ask that?

insurance is only supposed to cover losses during periods where you ARE insured. You cannot get insurance just to get them to cover damage you already had.

What you are attempting IS insurance fraud and ILLEGAL. Why do you state not to go blabbing about it?

And I am sure if you called them to tell them your window was broken, they are going to have it recorded and when you call back in a couple days, they will look and see that you called. Also if you add a specific type of insurance and then in a few days file a claim under that new additional coverage, that will throw up a huge red flag and they will give you two choices: 1 PROVE that the window broke AFTER you added the insurance OR find a new carrier. I can pretty much guarantee that they will (WHEN you cannot prove it happened after the insurance was added) they will drop you and file attempted fraud charges. Just pay for the window and be done with it.

Answer by MSAD
That is insurance fraud. It is a crime.

If you did not have comprehensive coverage in force at the time the glass was broken and you then add coverage and lie about when it happened – that is illegal. It is fraud.

The insurance company will have a record of the call where you asked if the glass would be covered and were told you did not have the comprehensive coverage. If you are unable to produce a receipt and front and back check copy showing where you had the glass replaced prior to the 2nd claim- they can deny your claim.

In many states, they can then turn their documentation over to the attorney generals office for prosecution. Insurance fraud is taken very seriously. Many says have a prosecutor dedicated only to insurance fraud cases.

Your ideal bet is to call a local glass service (not a body shop or dealership). They can come out to your home and put the new glass in. They are much cheaper than a body shop (who just calls the glass service out to the shop then adds mark up to the bill). A rear window glass, especially if it does not have the heat strips in it, is not that expensive. Much superior to just call a local glass company and handle it out of pocket.

Answer by Mushu
No sorry. You aren’t covered for the loss, not because there is a waiting period (there isn’t), but because you did not carry the appropriate coverage at the time of the loss.

——————————————

Question by manofabluedog:
Check someone elses automobile insurance coverage.?
I was rear ended about a month ago. I would like to find out what kind of coverage they have. Is there a way to check on the web what kind of policy they had via their Policy Number?
Thanks, didnt know that. I was just unsure of whether their insurance would cover my chiropractor costs.

——————————————

Answer by Vipassana
So you want to find out personalized and private information about someone else?

And why do you think that would be legal?

Answer by Old Man Dirt
There is no way any insurance company will divulge this information willingly! The reason is simple, those who are perceived as having deep pockets get slapped with larger law suits. If you read the instructions from an insurance company they make it very clear that the policy holder is not to discuss amount of coverage with any one else.
So unless you can get the information from the other party, it will not be available to you or your representative in the matter.

——————————————
