Question by ishmestephanie:
Did anyone else know that automobile insurance companies run your credit?
My boyfriend and I were thinking of moving. We are both on our parents insurance and what not so I was just running quotes to see what the rates would be like, and it asked me for my social… What the heck does your FICO have to do with getting automobile insurance? I dont really see a correlation between your credit score and getting into an accident…

——————————————

Answer by rottendog93
But they do, and you are trying to do business with them.
Deadbeats usually do not pay any bills on time.

Answer by oklatom
It’s no secret they run your credit. They are looking for risk factors that would increase your premium, and having a poor credit rating has been shown to increase the risk to the insurance.

Of course, you are not required to give out your social security number, but if you don’t, they can decline to insure you.

Likewise, your employment can also affect it. A bookkeeper would be less risk than a police officer for example.

Added: afterthought. Also it will decide if you can make payments, or if they want the whole thing paid up front.

Answer by sideboom
just stay on your parents plan until you get on your feet. your parents can do a credit check on their own plan( for you),to see how well you score with the company.

——————————————

Question by MyMommy:
Will paying your auto insurance in a timely manner bring up your credit score?
ok i just turned 18, recently got my own automobile insurance. I would like to know, if your auto insurance would bring up your credit score or seeing that I have no credit, add to it? I know that some companies are checking credit before giving a quote, but i dont know if it would in any way help your credit.

Thanks

——————————————

Answer by Tracker
No. They do not report it to the credit bureaus.

They check your credit because there is a correlation between good credit and good drivers / bad credit and bad drivers. Bad credit=irresponsiblity

Answer by bdancer222
While it’s a good idea to pay all your bills in a timely manner, things like your insurance, rent, utilities, etc do not report timely payment to the credit bureaus and do not impact your credit score.

Answer by SPIFIMAN1
No things like automobile insurance, rent, utilities, cell phones and gym memberships do not report to the credit bureaus unless you do not pay them.

The reason is they are not considered loans.

Question by mimi:
Is the automobile insurance company going to run my credit each time I get a quote?
I am getting of my parents automobile insurance and i am shopping around for a good quote. I called one person who needed to run my credit. Is each company going to want to run my credit? I do not want my scores to go down.

——————————————

Answer by yes_its_me
Don’t let anyone run your credit until you get the quote you want. Have them just use your demographic and personal data to quote. Then if you like the quote let them run your credit to verify you are qualified.

Answer by David
Someone checking your score will not injured your credit rating; it happens all the time. And there are some companies that do not check it; watch their ads on Television and in print to find them. Last time I pulled my reports, I noted about ten insurers had looked at mine, with no bad results.

Answer by PMack
They will run your credit because your credit rating can affect your insurance rates. People that are irresponsible with their finances (and have poor credit scores as a result) are often irresponsible drivers too, so if you have a poor credit score you might have to pay more for insurance.

That said, their running your credit has no impact on your credit score, there is no reason why it should.

Question by jason r:
Auto insurance company wants to check my credit and past infractions.?
My auto insurance company (which i’ve been using for 6 months now) wants to check my credit history and past infractions in order to benefit from “new lower rates”

i have good credit, but a couple of speeding tickets, could this actually increase my rate?
They stated that having good credit will put me in a lower risk categoery.

——————————————

Answer by oklatom
If they were not aware of the speeding tickets upon setting your rates, it could indeed put you into a higher risk category and raise your rates. I am surprised they did not check it before taking you on as a client, most do.

Answer by ca_surveyor
Well they are entitled to look up your driving history, but I would tell them to stuff it on the credit inquiry.

1) Its none of their business unless they are offering you the insurance on a credit basis and

2) Who knows what they will do with your SS# and other information after you give it to them.

Better leave that ‘bell’ unrung.

.

Answer by Jihn
Most insurers anymore (where it is granted by the state) require a credit check. But when it comes to your driving history, they take your word when you apply for the policy on your driving record, but will ALWAYS pull your driving record which includes tickets and accidents. A dishonest application will result in at the very least increased rates and possibly even cancellation of your policy if there are major discrepencies. Ideal policy is to be up-front with your history and receive accurate rates.
BTW, they do not need your SS# to pull your driving record so I would assume that was already done.

——————————————

Question by gregwhatshisname:
Why would my credit score have any bearing on my annual premiums for automobile or home insurance?
Recently, I had a homeowners policy with on the web insurer ESURANCE. I was under the impression that my homeowners policy would automatically renew. No. You have to call ESURANCE and tell them you want to renew or they cancel you. After I was cancelled I called up to reopen my old account. No can do. So we opened a new account. My annual premium went from $ 468 to over $ 1400! I have never filed any claims or changed anything at my house. However, like many Americans, I have been laid off and bill payments have piled up. It’s fair to state my credit score has dropped. But a 300% markup? I called other insurers; Allstate, Nationwide, Say Farm; they were all close to $ 1000 annually! How can insurance companies get away with this? What do they think, if I am slow at paying my bills my home might burn down?

——————————————

Answer by John C
Part of it is the credit, but a very small part of the change I would guess. Many insurance companies jack up rates each year in excess of 20%, especially on accounts that are in escrow. My homeowners insurance went up substantially because they claim over last year it would cost that much more to rebuild my home because of increased costs in materials, So my $ 47,000 house, which was insured for rebuild at $ 165,000 was increased to $ 240,000 in insurance. A 5 minute phone call got it dropped back down. Good luck.

Answer by ☼AstrologerJuliAnne☼
Yes, your premium is tied to your credit score now. Perhaps their logic is that you might be so far in debt that you resort to burning down your home to collect the insurance.. LOL

Answer by NJ
All rates have gone up, The storms on the coast, floods in the Midwest and the fires in CA can cause rates nation wide to rise, AND they have.
Credit does matter as well, a lower score will get you a higher premium
Farmers is the worst.
So a combo of all together has caused your increase.

Go with a company that has an REAL AGENT, esurance might sound good but there is nobody with you interest.

——————————————
I just feel that if the Say is going to require by law auto insurance ,, then your credit should not have anything to do with your rate! Many companies do not even tell you they are running your credit, but they do! This needs to be changed !
what’s next they going to charge us what the wish on our next Huge Mac based on our credit score?

Answer by oklatom
Yes, I knew it. Nothing new about it, a credit score tells a lot about a person and is one of the things they check to set your rates.

They certainly do not keep it a secret that your credit score will be run, and your driving record will be looked at also.

Answer by graciouswolfe
I know that any bad marks on your credit score, definitely effect your insurance rate. I do not like it, but hey, our government has long granted the insurance industry to do as they please.

Answer by Clevis D
It’s THEIR company, THEIR guidelines and policy. By the way, you are not REQUIRED to have insurance — you are only required to have the funds available if you are found liable for a collision and/or injury.

I made the reservation on the web for my 21 year old son and the charges were to be $ 175. but when he arrived at their facility, he was pressured into concurring to additional charges like insurance and an upgrade to a luxury car. He used my credit card and they have posted charges of $ 435. What can I state to my credit card company to get the $ 435 reduced to $ 175? I do not care how, but I have got to get these charges reduced. Help Me!!!!!

Answer by Mark Penne
Say your card have been stolen or lost, this are the two ideal excuse.

Answer by Donnie Porko
if you stated it was stolen, then your son will be in a lot of trouble for unauthorized use of your credit card. his signature will be on the form, so he is pretty much screwed if you report it in.

you need to speak to the automobile rental company. you might be able to lower it down, but do not anticipate to be charged 175 dollars. it’ll probably be somewhere in the middle between 435 and 175.

He used my credit card and they have posted charges of $ 435. What can I state to my credit card company to get the $ 435 reduced to $ 175?

——————————————

Answer by eyecue_two
Call you card company and issue a challenge on it and explain why. Tell them that you entered into a contract with the automobile company and did not authorize any changes to the automobile rental agreement. If they take the claim and send it to the automobile company the automobile company can answer it and it will do nothing. The fail safe way to do this is to claim fraud but there might be problems with this since it is a third celebration involved being your son. Good Luck

Answer by Sean
Bill your son for the difference. He is the one who authorized the charges. Also, most rental companies will not release a automobile to anyone under 25, and the ones that do, generally charge additional insurance because the company policy doesn’t cover drivers under 25. You can try to dispute it with the credit card company, but that likely will not go anywhere. The one area you could possibly have a case, and you would have to talk with a lawyer about it for certain, is the fact that the rental agent granted someone who did not make the reservation to alter it and to amend the charges. That could constitute fraud in some says on the part of the agency.

As for the pressuring part…That’s irrelevant. If your 21 year old adult son is too weak minded to decline something as easy as that, perhaps you should be more cautious about putting things on your credit card for him.

Answer by Alquiler De coches
Hi guys,

You can call your card company and issue a challenge on it and explain why. Tell me that you entered into a contract with the automobile company and did not authorize any changes to the automobile rental agreement. it’s a huge fault of the credit card company.Next time if you want a cheapest automobile rental service.
