Question by di:
Do I need auto insurance if I do not have a automobile or plan on driving?
I want to get my license because it is something that I need to get out of the way now. I do not have a automobile or plan on driving until I can even afford auto insurance but this summer is the only time I have free to get my license. I am 20 and in college.
My mother stated that until I am 21 that I would have to go under her insurance automatically…even though I do not have a automobile or plan on driving at college…that’s the only reason I am confused as to why i’d have to pay. Her insurance would go up if I do not plan on driving.

Answer by leecavcu
You get insurance on your car, not yourself. If you do not have a automobile you have nothing to insure.

Question by inskin:
Which auto insurance companies DON’T use a credit score when deciding rates?
I disagree with the use of credit scores and auto insurance, and would like to find an auto insurance company that doesn’t use the method when selling me their service. Does anyone know of companies that do not check your credit, and instead uses your driving record, age, etc….like it used to be?

——————————————

Answer by causant
Allstate does not use credit score when calculatin your rate at all. Progressive uses credit score only if you are paying in installments..you usually pay more. If you are paying for the policy in one payment, they do not take credit score into account.

Answer by car253
It also depends on what say your in. In California credit scores are not used.

I think credit scores are wrong. You need to contact the Department of Insurance in your say and let them know you are against credit scores. A link is below. Just click on your state.

Answer by mbrcatz
Leader Infinity will, at your request – but they will automatically give you the highest rates, assuming you have bad credit.

I’m sure there are others.

The PROBLEM is, there IS a direct corrolation between claims paid out and credit score – so the companies that were last, moving into credit scoring, wrote higher risk policies unknowingly, using the old methods. They had higher losses, and had to raise rates, etc.

To be more competitive, to be able to write GOOD business that doesn’t have the losses of higher risk clients, they HAVE to be able to sort out those higher risk clients. Credit scoring does that.

——————————————

Question by ━═★Lucky13★═━:
Does Safe Auto insurance cost more since they do not check credit?
I just saw a commercial for Safe Auto & they stated they do not check credit. Do most other insurance companies check it? And does that make Safe Auto’s rates higher? Basically, I need liability insurance and as cheap as possible. I do not have a bad driving record but my credit is not good.

——————————————

Answer by rottendog93
Yes they are high, and for minimum coverage. Minimum coverage might keep Johnny law off your butt, but it will not do much for you if you injure someone or do major damage.

Answer by Entidtil
Basically…..Some check credit, some don’t. Simply call around for quotes and select the ideal quote for you and your circumstances…..basically

Answer by lucy
Safe Auto is high risk insurance, that is the reason they say they do not check credit, since most people who purchase it, cant purchase from a huge name auto insurance company due to their credit, driving record of tickets, or multiple accidents in the past.

Your ideal bet is to get multiple quotes from at least 3 companies. I recommend you call a agent and discuss and they will give you their suggestions. Also, with any high risk auto, most only have minimum limits only, so if you have any assets, you need more than the minimum to protect you.

As a general rule, any accidents/tickets etc will stay on your record for 3 years and if as you say you driving record is good, I recommend you try some of the other companies even with bad credit, since the rates they will charge will most likely be cheaper than Safe Auto.

good luck

——————————————

Question by dlavaee:
Can someone file a claim w/ the other persons insurance if they personally dont have auto insurance themselves?
I have a client whose automobile got rear ended by another automobile and he is suffering a pretty bad knee injury due to the accident. Can he file a claim with the other persons insurance company even if he personally doesnt have auto insurance? I know in the say of California it is illegal to drive without automobile insurance, but does that mean he cant file a claim for his automobile and injuries? Thanks

——————————————

Answer by fighting saints
CA is a “no pay no play” state. Which means an uninsured driver who is not at-fault for an accident can not collect for pain and suffering resulting from an injury. He might get his medical bills paid but he will not get any of that money because it will go directly to the doctor.

He can collect on the automobile damages with no problem.

He can file a claim but he will be severely limited in what he can collect on. The at-fault celebrations insurance company should notify him in writing what can can be paid and what cannot be paid.

Driving without insurance is going to cost this person a good chunk of injury money.

Answer by David
Yes, he can, and he can probably collect, too, but he will have issues with the DMV when he cannot prove his insurance–such as a suspended license. And if he has an at-fault accident, it will only get worse.

——————————————

Question by monica a:
car insurance i dont concur to terms offererd do i have a choice and if so what are my options?
i was involed in a automobile accident the damage was driver side wing . the quote was costly and insurance stated automobile was a write-off and offered book price i do not concur with insurance .the automobile is repairable i have still got log book .who is responsible for automobile until agreement is made

——————————————

Answer by Yo’ Mama
Technically, any automobile is repairable. It’s a matter of economics. Most insurance companies follow a formula to determine if they are going to pay to repair a automobile or if it is a total loss. Your damaged automobile has what is called salvage value. To determine if it’s worth repairing, the insurer usually determines what the fair market value is on your car–immediately prior to the accident. This takes into account its age, equipment, mileage, prior damage, condition (i.e. rust), etc. From the retail value, they subtract the salvage value and the difference is the most they would pay to repair the vehicle. If the estimated repair cost exceeds that figure, they figure it’s a total loss. The hardest part for most people is accepting what fair market value is. Most people feel their automobiles are worth far more than what an insurer values it. However, insurers have to use objective means of valuation just like a automobile dealer or appraiser. If you disagree with the value, you could contact a automobile appraiser to look at the automobile and tell you what it is worth. Then ask your insurer to explain how they arrived–mathematically–at the decision that your automobile had to be totalled and not repaired.

Answer by mbrcatz17
YOU are. It might be repairable, but the insurance company is only responsible for THE LESSER OF the cost of fixes or the acutal cash value (note, NOT book value) of the car. Once they have made an offer for the lesser of the two, they ALSO do not have to pay any more storage fees.

If you do not like it, you can take them to court over it. It’s not necessarily going to get you any more money. It will not get storage fees paid. And it could take up to 18 months.

Answer by AD
The laws of each say can vary but in general – a automobile is deemed a total loss when the cost to repair the automobile (including parts and labor) equals or exceeds 75% of the car’s actual cash value (what you could have reasonably sold the automobile for 1 min before it’s damage- given the automobiles options, mileage and condition).

If the estimate exceeds 75% of the automobiles value – then by law, the insurance company has to total loss it.

If the estimate is close to 75% and the insurance company anticipates that a supplement for additional damage will be likely during the automobiles repair that could put the automobile over the 75% mark, then they will usually go ahead and total loss the car.

If you want to repair the vehicle, you can elect to purchase back the salvage. (ie purchase back the wrecked automobile from the insurance company). Depending on the year/make of your automobile – salvage value can run anywhere from 20%-30%. Most sedans are in the 20-25 range and trucks 25-30. The insurance company would take the actual cash value of the automobile and subtract the salvage value and that is how much they pay you + you get the car.

If you select to purchase back the automobile and repair it – then any costs to repair the automobile that run higher than what you were paid by the ins co – you will have to pay out of pocket.

You will also have a salvage title – so the re-sell value of the repaired automobile would be less than a automobile that does not have a branded title.

If you automobile is a “rolling total” – ie – the estimate makes it a total loss but the automobile is save to drive – people will frequently select to retain the salvage.

Until you sign the title to the automobile over to the insurance company you are legally responsible for the automobile – that means you have to keep paying taxes on it and making your automobile payments.

——————————————
I live Brooklyn, NY. I am 24, female and I badly need cheap auto insurance, Help please.

——————————————

Answer by Gosiden
Just with living in Brooklyn and not knowing any other information such as your automobile and driving history, I would doubt you can find insurance that cheap. Urban environments always have higher rates, and NYC is brutal when it comes to cost of insurance.

Answer by Entidtil
My idea is for you to call several insurance companies for quotes. Is there any other way?

For instance I have a “spectator to racing ticket” when a friend of mine attempted to outspeed a automobile that sped by him on the highway, he got pulled over and charged with street racing, and I received a citation for being a passenger in the car. (ridiculous I know) Now since I was not the driver, nor was my car involved, should I still have to list this when filling out an on the web insurance quote? and if I do not what can happen if they find out later? Will they raise my rates immediately? Drop my policy? Or is there anything more serious they can do than that?

Answer by Bill
All insurance companies will run your motor car report and find all of your violations. If you lied or left something out, the policy will be rescinded and if you have a accident prior to notification you will not be covered.

Answer by mandelin98
They will eventually find out by running your motor car report. Most companies do not do this until after you begin and pay as this report costs money. Depending on the company and contract you will either be given a new premium or be cancelled or moved into a different risk group within the company, that could affect your coverages .

Question by Benjie:
Are you able to keep private health care if you do not want government ran health care?
Just curious, mostly because it annoys me when people compare it to automobile insurance. You can select to drive or even own a automobile for that matter. If you do not want health care and not be fined for it you have to be dead with this new health care reform.
I got the “car insurance” comparison by watching CNN and came up with the though on my own, so quit bashing Fox News. I will not tolerate intolerance in the answers. I will report them. Just saying.

——————————————

Answer by ammazammariffic
there is no public option.. just private ones…
we are forced to select between for-profits (unless you are super duper cant afford food type of poor.. then they can get federally assisted types or opt out all together (the penalties wont apply to them))
not what the dems originally wanted..
it was a compromise bill

along the automobile analogy: closest thing would be choosing not to live (no living body is like not driving car).. not a good option!

Answer by flyinzay
You can keep private health care, the only people newly offered government health care (medicaid) are families of four with a household income under $ 30,000/year. They did not pass universal health care. They only passed an increase in the poverty level (as mentioned above) and regulations on private health care.

——————————————
