Question by Johnny:
College Student transferring from VA to SC – do I have to get new automobile insurance?
I am a college student in Virginia and in August I will be transferring down south to South Carolina (USC). I have a great automobile insurance quote at the moment. Geico would give me around $ 155/month just like esurance, progressive and the like. Though, the local statefarm bureau stated they had give me a quote for half that much. Is there a way that I can keep my Virginia Insurance in South Carolina? I doubt that I will ever get a quote like that again in a huge college town.
Thanks for the advice!

——————————————

Answer by Michael P
Insurance companies do base your premiums on where your automobile is parked at night (i.e. your residence). You could just not tell Geico that you are moving, but if you need to file a claim they could very easily deny it and you could even be in trouble for fraud.

Unfortunately, moving is one of those things that does force you to shop for insurance all over again.

Answer by Kelly
You need to get new insurance, because if you have an accident they will ask you why are you in SC. Also, you might get a cheaper rate so it might not be all that bad.

Answer by lar
you did not mention parents at all in this question. If you were being carried under your parents, then it would not really make any difference, but if you are buying the insurance you will have to get new in each say you go to.

——————————————

Question by Jordan:
If I buy auto insurance from AAA, am I automatically enrolled in AAA roadside assistance?
When I bought AAA auto insurance last year, I was sent an AAA membership card with an explanation of benefits. Now that my policy is up for renewal, AAA membership sent me another card with a bill. What gives?

——————————————

Answer by Ask & I might tell
You have to be enrolled in their roadside benefit program in order to have their insurance. You can have the card without the insurance, but not the insurance without the card.

Answer by rachel s
1st year was free. Roadside assistance does not come with the insurance. Sorry. I have had AAA insurance for 8 years and only had roadside assistance for the first 2 they still insure me though so I do not think you have to have roadside assistance for insurance unless the rules have changed.

Answer by Paul
Yes, but you have to pay extra.

I filled out an on-line form, got a quote, and went to their office to sign the paperwork. AFTER I payed for the road service, they THEN informed me that the price of the ins. would be higher than quoted.
HUH????supposedly, I made a mistake on the form. B.S. I told them to cram their insurance, but kept the roadside service for a year. (and did not use it, by the way)

Question by Jose:
Can auto insurance companies speak to each other regarding financial information from previous policies?
I requested a quote for fleet automobile insurance from a new insurance company. They required information from my previous carrier. They came back and stated they would not issue me insurance because my previous insurer informed them that I still owed them money. Is this information that they are granted to discuss?

——————————————

Answer by mbrcatz
Yes. Once you give them the finished application, there is small print at the bottom of it, where you sign off permission for them to investigate pretty much any way they want. Additionally, on the “loss runs” that EVERY carrier requests, there is still space for earned premium.

Lastly, in some states, it’s flat out required – it’s a question on the application – “do you owe any carrier any outstanding premiums?” and they CAN report it. That is so you cannot jump from carrier to carrier screwing each one of them for their premiums.

Answer by wg0z
yes. and they do it.

——————————————

Question by RPG:
Plan to switch from Liberty Mutual to Amica – Auto Insurance – Need Help?
Presently I pay $ 109 to Liberty Mutual per month towards my automobile insurance. I have 2002 Nissan Sentra 83 K miles. I have taken 100/300, 50K property damage and 500 for collision and comprehensive. Also Roadside assistance and automobile rental $ 30/$ 900. Feel bad that I pay a lot for this old car.

Just got an on the web quote from Amica. They quote me $ 90 per month for the same configuration which I presently have. Is Amica reliable auto insurance provider with respective to claims?

Does Amica Auto Insurance cover insurer’s rental automobile (car rented from Enterprise, hertz)? I could not find this information from their website.

Any suggestions/ help welcome. Thank you

——————————————

Answer by roger
be careful about getting quotes off the world wide web , often times it might change at a later date. Personally you can probably call the local yellow pages and ask agents local to you for a superior quote. I recommend if your insurance is paid up that you just let it run its course, anything you do to change in the middle of a policy ,may likely end up with excessive fees, and mistakes and excuses that eat up any savings you think you will get back, insurance companies do not like giving money back. I would set it up for the day the policy ends, and contact your insurance company at that time and cancel. They will want to know what company you are going with because they send letters to the motor cars now when you leave .

Answer by Entidtil
In the USA, All insurance companies are decent. If they were not, they would not be issued a license to sell insurance. You can check any insurance company specific satisfaction ratings on either A.M. Best, or J.D. Powers websites. You will have to ask Amica if they provide a rental.

Despite what others have stated here, There are no penalties and no problems and no reason you can’t cancel when you want to cancel.

Tip: It is ALWAYS more costly to pay for insurance monthly compared to semi-annually or annually. People who pay monthly are being “penny wise and pound foolish”.

Answer by G G
They are both good companies. You can cancel anytime you want to cancel without problems or financial loss. You do not need to let your present policy expire before you switch. There is no good reason to do that. Be careful of people giving you advice who have not a clue as to what they are speaking about. Any questions can ideal be answered by your present insurance company and by your prospective insurance company. Communicate with them.

I made the reservation on the web for my 21 year old son and the charges were to be $ 175. but when he arrived at their facility, he was pressured into concurring to additional charges like insurance and an upgrade to a luxury car. He used my credit card and they have posted charges of $ 435. What can I state to my credit card company to get the $ 435 reduced to $ 175? I do not care how, but I have got to get these charges reduced. Help Me!!!!!

Answer by Mark Penne
Say your card have been stolen or lost, this are the two ideal excuse.

Answer by Donnie Porko
if you stated it was stolen, then your son will be in a lot of trouble for unauthorized use of your credit card. his signature will be on the form, so he is pretty much screwed if you report it in.

you need to speak to the automobile rental company. you might be able to lower it down, but do not anticipate to be charged 175 dollars. it’ll probably be somewhere in the middle between 435 and 175.

He used my credit card and they have posted charges of $ 435. What can I state to my credit card company to get the $ 435 reduced to $ 175? ——————————————

Answer by eyecue_two
Call you card company and issue a challenge on it and explain why. Tell them that you entered into a contract with the automobile company and did not authorize any changes to the automobile rental agreement. If they take the claim and send it to the automobile company the automobile company can answer it and it will do nothing. The fail safe way to do this is to claim fraud but there might be problems with this since it is a third celebration involved being your son. Good Luck

Answer by Sean
Bill your son for the difference. He is the one who authorized the charges. Also, most rental companies will not release a automobile to anyone under 25, and the ones that do, generally charge additional insurance because the company policy doesn’t cover drivers under 25. You can try to dispute it with the credit card company, but that likely will not go anywhere. The one area you could possibly have a case, and you would have to talk with a lawyer about it for certain, is the fact that the rental agent granted someone who did not make the reservation to alter it and to amend the charges. That could constitute fraud in some says on the part of the agency.

As for the pressuring part…That’s irrelevant. If your 21 year old adult son is too weak minded to decline something as easy as that, perhaps you should be more cautious about putting things on your credit card for him.

Answer by Alquiler De coches
Hi guys,

You can call your card company and issue a challenge on it and explain why. Tell me that you entered into a contract with the automobile company and did not authorize any changes to the automobile rental agreement. it’s a huge fault of the credit card company.Next time if you want a cheapest automobile rental service.

Question by Isaiah T:
Can I register my automobile in a different say from what my license says?
I am originally from massachusetts (technically still a permanent resident) and go to graduate school in Indiana (where I spend most of my time during the year). However, right now during my summer break I am and will be in New Jersey. Is it possible for me to register my automobile in Indiana to take advantage of the insurance premiums?

Also, can you register online? Or does it have to be on-site? Thank you.

——————————————

Answer by Franklin P
I will answer part of your question. I do not believe you can register on line because of taxes, etc. imposed by each separate state. And they need all the information regarding the car. VIN number, etc.

Answer by ckhamel1961
Insurance generally goes to where you are permanently resident, so if you are still a resident of Massachusetts you will probably have to obtain insurance there. You can call an Indiana insurance agent for sure, though, because each say is a tiny different on their handling of that. You can register your car in Indiana any time, but this will not change your residency status. I have provided a link below for Indiana’s residency requirements.

If you determine you are an Indiana resident, you must obtain an Indiana drivers license and register your car with the say within 60 days. You must appear in person to register your car initially, but might renew on the web thereafter. Also, you must have a police clearance on your car prior to initial registering.

Answer by oklatom
No, only residents of a say can get a license, either driving or vehicle, and being a student doesn’t make you a resident.
