Why does everyplace want your telephone number?
Does anybody remember the common old box where you used to check preferred method of communication? It’s not so common any more. Everything I try do on the web from ordering a magazine subscription to getting an auto insurance quote requires* at the very least a telephone number. I despise those asterisks next to required fields!

Often its more than a telephone number. They want address, zip code, and date of birth too. It would be nice if I could just get an auto insurance quote sent to my email without getting endless telemarketing calls and junk mail at my home. My telephone number is private, which I paid a fee to have. It does seem pointless though because so many each day things that are necessary for me to do require giving out this information which I am trying to protect. I went shopping yesterday and each store wanted either my phone number or zip code. I feel like its getting out of control.

Does anybody know what stores actually do with that information? I know each time I do something on the web I get crap loads of junk mail and junk email. Sometimes multiple telemarketing calls result as well. Mostly I just want to know how to keep my phone number private. I have been trying to get auto insurance quotes all morning without giving out my phone number and its just not possible.

I feel like there should be a privacy law that protects us from unwanted advertising.
