I am thinking about purchasing a Yamaha Vino (2004-08 model) and also I will be obtaining my Motorcycle Instruction Permit. I would like to know if I would need any form of auto/motorcycle insurance while practicing with my permit. If so, how much would it cost me per month (rough estimate)? I am 16 years old btw.

Question by fallingout13:
Is it legal for an auto insurance to refuse to cover my son who only has a permit at all?
My son is 16 and we live in texas, he only has a permit. Is it legal for an auto insurance (allstate) to refuse to cover my automobile if he gets in a automobile crash even though I am driving with him and I am insured? Links to references so I can show allstate if it is not legal will get the ideal answer.

——————————————

Answer by mary d
I do not think this is a legal question because Allstate can refuse to cover anyone it wishes. Just like a bartender can refuse to serve anyone they want…it is a business and this is a free country. My insurance co covered all my children while they were on a permit but I live in Indiana. Are you an at risk customer or is Texas an at risk state???

Answer by juston g
Does your policy say that a licensed driver has to be operating the car in order to be covered? If this is the case, then I would think it is legal since the river is not licensed. Your auto insurance agent should be able to help you with this information. If the agent can’t, you might want to think about a new insurance company that has an agent who can answer auto insurance questions. To my understanding, a driving permit makes it legal for a driver to drive a car as long as a licensed driver over the age of 18 is in the front seat. With all of this being said, one would believe a driver with a permit would be covered as long as ll the rules are being followed and your policy doesn’t say otherwise. Some parents sign wavers saying their kids, friends or relatives living with them will never under any situation drive the policyholder’s vehicle(s) to keep from having to insure them on their policy.

Answer by MSAD
Have you listed your son as a driver on your policy? I suspect not.

If he is not listed on your policy and the car is provided for his regular use, then yes, coverage can be denied.

Therefore, call your agent and list your son as a driver on the policy. You will have to pay the rate increase.

——————————————
