I’ve tried Farmers insurance and Geico. Both places quoted around $ 240-$ 280 each 6 months (or monthly payments). I did an on the web quote at Progressive and got a quote for around $ 180.00 (which was much cheaper). But I do not know if I filled the information out right? Oh btw, I am trying to insure my 1995 Ford F-150 pickup. The insurance seems much more costly on this automobile than with other automobiles in my family.

I would be greatly obliged if you did not limit your answer to something like “contact your insurance agent”.

For one, I do not have one yet, that is part of the problem. I currently have neither a automobile nor insurance. For my first car, I want to buy a automobile from one of the many people selling their used automobiles in my metropolitan area. But without insurance, I cannot drive the automobile home or even test drive it.

I would like to buy the minimum liability insurance that is required by California law BEFORE I select and buy a automobile so that way I can go to nearby cities test driving cars, and drive back the one I buy.

I have tried shopping on the web for insurance. I went to all the insurance companies that are on Television plus several others. I came across two issues 1) they base the insurance on what type of automobile you have, and I do not know which one I am going to get yet, 2) they want to sign me up for complete automobile and driver’s insurance, even though they claim to let me customize my plans.

I do not qualify for the say liability insurance for low income drivers.

Can you specifically name a place where I can walk in and buy only auto liability insurance?

I do not know of any company that will issue you a policy without knowing what kind of automobile you will be driving. How could they?

Some auto dealers will make you buy insurance (from the company of your choice) before you leave the lot, I guess it’s a potential liability for them. I ran into this and it was annoying.

Private sellers, on the other hand, do not generally care if you have insurance. Once they have the money and sign over the pink slip, it’s not their problem. I would not worry too much about driving a automobile home un-insured and arranging a policy once you get home. They will generally take effect the same day or at midnight the following morning, so the chances of you having an incident in that few hours is pretty slim!

If you are truly paranoid, call the insurance company of your choice from the seller’s location before you leave and buy a policy. It only takes about 10 minutes and they can arrange it to be effective immediately and fax/email you the insurance docs. This is what I did at the dealership. As a side-note, I have generally found that calling the company is faster than trying to do it online. Just a tip.

As for the amount of coverage, I am not sure I comprehend your complaint. I had no problem buying a “legal minimum” policy on the web from Geico. If you are having issues with the world wide web sites, pick a company, call them and say that you want a “legal minimum liability-only” policy. Yes, they might try to sell you more coverage because that is what they are in the business of doing. If you do not want it, do not buy it.

Without a automobile they cannot quote you a rate or sell you insurance. It’s based on the type of automobile and written against the specific automobile not the driver. Test driving the automobiles is fine as the owner should have it insured. Then when you find the one you want to buy take the information to an agent and buy insurance against it in your name.

To start with, if you do not have a car, you cannot get insurance on a car, since it goes with the vehicle, not with the driver. So if you are test driving, it’s with the owners permission and you are covered under his policy.

As to the second part, where to go when you do want to get insurance and are buying a car: You walk into the office of any local independent agent, and he will be able to assist you.

When you provide initial information such as name, address, drivers license number, and social security number to an insurance company, the purpose for this information is because they are going to run a dmv check along with a soft credit report check. Upon receipt of the report they have your driving history (well about 6 years of it).

Your accident when you were driving your boyfriend’s truck will appear as the driver of that vehicle, but it will list him as the policyholder (it will also list how much was paid out in the accident and it should also demonstrate if it was paid through comp- cp or collision- co or medical- m or pi).

So regardless if you were the policyholder, or not you will still be listed as the driver (since you were driving the truck when the accident happened).

The only way to get cheaper automobile insurance is to go on your parents policy. This is the way most Teens do it in the States. Unfortunately, your insurance is going to stay up there until you get over the age of 27 or 28 years old. Sorry.

Depends on the say insurance rules. In some says you are asked if there was ever a break in your coverage – if yes then you end up paying a lot more even if you never had an accident. Contact the insurance company – see if they will accept partial payment to carry you until the 15th.

My son had a wreck first day he purchased his car,he was getting insurance that day,the old man was at fault,not my son,they took my son’s driver’s license away for months,he paid all damage to the old man,paid $ 150 for 1st offense to get the license back,I would recommend asking if u can make a low down payment till your check comes in coz it can really cost ya if something like this happens!
