Question by Phillyfan23:
Are there auto insurance options for poorer people out there?
I am getting high quotes from the auto insurance places, like 200 a month plus….this is mainly due to a lapse in coverage since i was not driving for a while…but i really would like to get my premiums lower than this…is there any advice out there about ways to do this?

——————————————

Answer by Smudgeward
You need to begin back on an insurance rated group one or two car, that makes a large difference after lapsing. A few co’s offer free no claims to people going back to driving.

Answer by mbrcatz
$ 2400 a year, tells me you are probably pretty young, or have rotten credit, or a bad driving record, or a combination of those.

What to do, is wait a few years, and clean up your credit and driving records, and try again.

Answer by car253
There are say programs for low income people. Usually it only covers liability and there are some qualifications. A link is below. Call to find an agent in your area.

So im 17, new driver, and getting a 1988 monte carlo ss. i know it doesnt sound to pretty but is there any auto insurance at all that wont charge me shit loads? The lowest one i saw was 507 a month, not to pretty=/

——————————————

Answer by WKSP
Unfortunately, as a young driver your rates will be higher. I am guessing you are not on your parents policy so you probably do not have prior insurance either. I would advocate going to a few insurance agents in your area, ask friends and people you trust about agents they might recommend. Get quotes from the agents to compare, they should give you quotes from different companies they work with. Also, speak to the agents, ask them questions, that is what they are there for. They might even have discounts you could qualify for depending on where you live. Let them know if the price is too high. When you are going through their quotes, have them explain the parts you do not understand. If you do not comprehend what a comprehensive deductible is or why it is on the quote for your auto, they will be able to explain it to you and you could select to not have it. They might be adding things you do not need to your quote that is increasing the premium. It will take time for you to get these quotes but it will help if you have your information for them when you get there. Info they will probably need is the Car Identification Number (VIN), your Driver License Number, Social Security Number, Date of Birth, Address, and some other info like that.

Full Coverage will cost more than Liability only but you might be required to have full coverage because of a loan or something like that. There are a few add-ons that you might not need too. Just ask about them.

——————————————

Question by :
Is there a way to verify if someone is covered by auto insurance?
My daughter was in an auto accident where the other person was at fault. The insurance policy that she gave was canceled a tiny over a month ago. Is there some way we can check to see if this person has a new policy some where else? The automobile she was driving was a 2008 so I would assume she has a loan on it and that would require her to have full coverage.

——————————————

Answer by car253
There is no way for you or your insurance company to know.

Your insurance company will either call her or if you got her license plate number, they will send her a letter asking for her insurance info.

Now, it is important to know if you have collision insurance or uninsured motorist coverage on your auto insurance. If you do then let your insurance company fix your car. Then they will go after the other celebration for reimbursement. And, your right she probly has insurance since she was driving a newer car.

You do not need to do any of the work. Your claim rep does all that for you. That is what you pay them for. So, keep in contact with the claim rep and ask them if they are called her or sent letters to her asking for her info. Also, ask them how many days they give the other celebration to respond.

If you have any problems, contact your agent for help.

Answer by David W
Their having insurance now will not help you at all; if they had no insurance at the time of the accident, you are out of luck, and they will have issues with the DMV. (Have you filed a police report with your insurance verified? If the other driver doesn’t file a “matching” report, their license can and should be suspended.)

Your auto insurance should include uninsured/underinsured driver coverage, which will pay for your injuries and damage, with a deductible on the damage portion; ask your agent about it.

Answer by oklatom
Okay, follow most of the advice car253 gave you. But ignore the advice that you, or your insurance company cannot find out. You can’t, it’s restricted to you under the Drivers Privacy Protection Act (Federal law, 18 U.S.C) but under exceptions, B:6: it clearly states:

(6) For use by any insurer or insurance support organization, or by a self-insured entity, or its agents, employees, or contractors, in connection with claims investigation activities, anti-fraud activities, rating or underwriting.

So yes indeed, your agent can get that information and assist you in collecting.

——————————————

Question by sb24: is there a special type of auto insurance for college students whom only drive while at home on vacation?

Question by sb24:
is there a special type of auto insurance for college students whom only drive while at home on vacation?
I need auto insurance for when im home and i do not want to pay for the whole year because i only drive during the summer when i am at home the rest of the year im away at school. thanks in advance.

——————————————

Answer by Great Scott
Sorry, no one offers a policy like that.

Answer by Ted
Just let your insurance company know, they remove you as a driver and then add you on when you are home. You get a lower rate for this instead of paying for the entire year. I believe all insurance companies do this now. I know Cooperators does.

Answer by mauisunset
I concur with the other person regarding some insurance companies can stop and begin your insurance on demand.

I think I did this back when I was in college (that was a long time ago!). Basically I had to call up the insurance company and tell them when I needed coverage and when I needed to stop it again.

Call your agent. Just bear in mind if you go home for Christmas, you will not have insurance when you are home unless you “turn it back on”.

Playing devil’s advocate, turning on and off an insurance policy might do wacky things with discounts on insurance that is based on being a “loyal customer” for “X” number of years. My auto insurance is gets a 5% discount for being with the company for continuously for years. You will need to ask if the start/stop thing will impact that.

——————————————

Question by D:
Is there a less costly auto insurance carrier other than Progressive?
I have a male friend who is middle aged & is paying close to $ 400 monthly for full coverage on his auto insurance that he has with Progressive. Does anyone else seem to think that this is a lot of money? Can anyone recommend a less costly automobile insurance carrier? I thank you in advance for your positive responses. Have a great day!!

Answer by Entidtil
The only way your friend or you or me can find a less costly insurer is to call around and get several quotes. The company that is cheapest for one could be the highest for another.

Answer by Howard L
It seems costly but without knowing his driving record, what type of automobile he is driving, and what the limits on his coverage are it’s impossible to state if it’s too much.

If he is paying $ 400 a month he nearly certainly has to have a history of accidents and tickets with a few possible DUIs as well.

Question by Korey S:
What is the absolute cheapest auto insurance out there?
Where can i get it the cheapest!? on the web or not. i dont care of all these extra benefits just basic full coverage insurance. I havent picked a automobile out yet but want to find cheapest first. im 19, male with a few traffic violations. also i am in the military if there are any good sites that have a discount. i have been researching and researching and no luck, please help!

——————————————

Answer by brk0586
USAA! I”ve been using them for years, very good deals! They are a military insurance/banking/investment company.

Answer by roger
you are not going to find the cheapest anything online. what you need first is a car, then you sit down with the local yellow pages and begin dialing local agents, I can usually get through about 10 to 12 before wanting to barf. Everyone of them is going to ask you about 30 questions if not more, most of what as far as you are concerned have nothing to do with insurance. If you refuse to answer the questions like where you live, zip code, what is your credit history like or job? you can not get a quote. So you will need to answer a whole bunch of questions get some quotes you will not like and have a choice pay one of them or not. None of them will be totally cheap. all of them will be totally high. If you have family, your ideal bet is to get on thier policy if they will let you. It will be cheaper for you in the long run. ideal of luck. If you keep trying to get quotes on the world wide web and pass out your name address and phone number to these sites, you will end up with tons of spam, calls to your phone selling other services, and junk mail for your enjoyment. Limit giving info on the internet. This does not happen when you call local agents, they have the ideal rates anyway.
